When I asked my little sister for song recommendations,I didn’t know what to expect. I only ever remember listening to Disney songs with her from the soundtracks of Descendants (2015), The Cheetah Girls (2003), Let It Shine (2012), and more. But then one day, I blinked and I realized that she’s growing up—she’s becoming her own person and finding her own interests. I decided to do a little dive into what music a thirteen-year-old girl, like her, was into.
First song she recommended to me was "Lover, You Should've Come Over” by Jeff Buckley. I’d heard of the chorus before, but never listened to the whole song, and overall it was quite enjoyable. This love song is so enduring and sweet with an epic beat and vulnerable lyrics. I almost shed a tear, but instead I blasted this song and added it to my favorites list! Jeff Buckley is a welcome addition to my favorite artists list and I want to deep dive into more of his music.
Next on the list was “Rotten to the Core” by Lexa Gates. The rap genre mixed with the soft aesthetic is unique and very captivating; it made me wonder what else this artist had to offer. Their soundscape is unique, and uses different paces and harmonies to intertwine different genres.
Now, I know Tyler, the Creator, but I haven’t heard of his song featuring Lil Wayne, “HOT WIND BLOWS.” It’s safe to say we all know Tyler, the Creator has a unique soundscape, but this song sets itself outside the box with it’s unique melodies. The beat reminded me of elevator music, but the rapping lyrically moves you. To note, Lil Wayne being on the song is even more iconic. In a funny sense, I ALMOST forgot he made music, so it’s good to hear him on this feature—and he did not disappoint!
Then, the vibes switched when I listened to “Kind Of” by Faye Webster. The acoustic guitar is a nice touch to this soft and beautiful song. The chorus surprised me by its pace, but this song makes me feel like the main character. I feel like I’m looking out the window and thinking about everything. Lastly, I listened to “The Ballad of Eddie Jabuley” by Hotel Ugly. I never heard of Hotel Ugly, but the first five seconds of the song sold me. It has a funky vibe that explodes the R&B genre and it’s super catchy. I even found myself singing the chorus. Out of all the songs she recommended, this song is my favorite!
It’s interesting to see that my sister has a diverse range of music that she listens to. Although I can take some credit for her music taste, these recommended songs prove that she’s finding her own way.
