After Hours With After Later

After Hours With After Later

WRITTEN BY A.A.V.

The mastery and intimacy listening to “After Later” after a typical mundane routine asserts a soft, psychedelic calmness upon the listener. The melody, background chimes, whimsical, almost alien-like instruments is credited to none other than Brock Geiger.

Often compared to a “musical chameleon”, Canadian-born singer and producer Brock Geiger has a decade-long run in the music industry, cited in collaborations and records, and will release their new album “Some Nights” on March 18.

To fully grasp the fluidity and smoothness that is “After Later”, the single is best played when the listener is in a secluded room with their senses’ guard lowered. Geiger’s voice crawls into the listener’s ear like a worm; it’s a contagious slowness that emphasizes the song’s slow tempo. LivingLifeFearless quotes Geiger’s thoughts on the single, “‘After Later’ was written at a time in my life when I could clearly see the door to an ending I needed, but found myself walking deeper into the maze. The title itself is a playful combination of words that evokes a feeling of being suspended in time—a sense of being stuck in a vague future that you can’t quite pin down.” “After Later’s” style is a combination of 1960’s-70’s avant-garde art deco with bohemian motifs, a recurring theme in some of Geiger’s other works such as “Lemonade.”  Around the 1:40 mark, there’s a veil of string instruments that covers the lack of vocals, a wise choice to let the listener admire the background effects. These elements combined with the lyrics’ departedness creates the perfect surreal environment and closes the song with a whisper.

Brock Geiger will likely release more similar, evocative tracks in the future but there is no future before the present and no present “After Later.”
