WRITTEN BY CHERRYLLE URBANO
As a die-hard fan of A24 films, the horror genre, and the spooky season of October, bennytheghost’s new single “ANIMAL,” featuring KiNG MALA, scratches my brain in such a beautifully dramatic way—if I may say, in a screaming, slashing manner.
bennytheghost is entering a new era, stepping into the dark side. As described in the release, “he leans into an A24 horror movie vibe complete with humor, some self-deprecation, and healthy absurdism.” I can easily picture this song as a soundtrack for Maxxxine from the X film series. He's already been featured on Elton John’s and Zane Lowe’s radio shows and included in several prominent Spotify playlists. “This single sonically represents this new world that has slowly been molded into the most profit-based, evil, capitalist nightmare and calls out society for its inhumane hunger for money when Benny, at the end of the chorus says, ‘You crave sophistication but you’re just an animal’.”
The intro is unforgettable, evoking the atmosphere of a party filled with hungry, greedy souls. There’s a seductive undertone, a desire that feels both enticing and sinister. If this song were to inspire a film, it would undoubtedly unfold in a dystopian horror landscape where greed manifests in an animalistic, gory fashion. The track delivers a rich tapestry of emotions, starting with its raw, clawing energy. Benny’s hauntingly deep voice transitions into a grunge-pop sound in the chorus, creating a powerful contrast. Then KiNG MALA enters, and her ethereal voices intertwine, crafting a stunning auditory experience.
But my favorite moment comes with the dramatic shift at the end. Literally, OH MY GOD! As a horror enthusiast, I can vividly envision a chilling, gothic climax that perfectly encapsulates the song’s essence. I can’t even explain it in words–you will have to trust me and have a listen for yourself. You’ll feel a chill run down your spine. This track is perfect for the season, and I urge everyone to dive into this hauntingly, craving masterpiece.
