On August 16th, colby! (she/her) released her new single, “Gone To Bed,” which explores misunderstandings, lack of communication, and questions between two people in a relationship who both believe they each deserve more. Instead of communicating, they decide to avoid the topic altogether.
colby! Grew up in Fort Worth, TX, and began writing music when she was 14 years old. She performed with her brother, RJ Johnson, who attended Berklee College of Music. After being diagnosed with severe dyslexia at a young age, she spent three years in therapy learning to slow down her brain in order to read.
“Gone To Bed” opens with a guitar riff and colby!’s ethereal and feathery-like voice. Towards the chorus, her voice mellows into a whisper, which adds a layer of intimacy and vulnerability. She is poised to challenge current pop trends, fitting seamlessly into the genre. I enjoyed the experimentation with the music’s sound, transitioning from acoustic to pop and then to a distant feel, reflecting the emotional distance caused by a lack of communication within the song’s story.
She posted a TikTok earlier with an acoustic version, offering an interesting contrast to the recorded track. Her raw sense of emotion, coupled with the choice to go soft, makes the song's story even more heartbreaking.
With the emotional depth, “Gone To Bed” resonates with fans of artists like Nessa Barrett and Madison Beer. Her fresh perspective promises to captivate listeners into the evolving pop landscape. Don’t miss out on colby!’s latest song—out now!
