Entering Soulful, Energetic Melodies in Lawrence’s New Album, Family Business

WRITTEN BY NEVAEH TILLMAN

When brain rotting as I scrolled on TikTok, I got pulled back into reality with a performance by Lawrence on The Tonight Show. I never heard of this band prior, thus it piqued my interest and within those 30 seconds, I was hooked! Immediately after, I grabbed my earbuds and listened to their newly released album, Family Business. This album gives off musical / Broadway vibes as each note sung is star-struck. The band consists of a sibling pair: Clyde and Gracie Lawrence, joined by Sam Askin on drums and percussion, Sumner Becker on Alto saxophone and shaker, Jordan Cohen on Tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, Michael Karsh on bass, Jonny Koh on guitar, and Marc Langer on trumpet. It’s evident that this band has found their soundscape and uses a musically well-rounded band to showcase their range of musicality.

Family Business is ultimately incredible—it’s evident that they sing soulfully with their hearts out. They maintain a funky, pop beat with soulful melodies and lyrics by the use of unique instruments, while being vulnerable and using storytelling elements. The first song that reeled me in is “Whatcha Want.” Gracie’s vocals gave me chills—the strength in her voice reminds me of Demi Lovato. Lawrence manages to collaborate well with songs, giving each singer a chance for a solo. Another song that had my ears ringing (in the best way) is “Guy I Used to Be.” Clyde takes the lead singing this song as Gracie adds catchy, beautiful background vocals. This band succeeds in delivering beautiful harmonies, each voice is unique and adds to their soundscape. The angelic tones squeeze through in “I'm Confident that I'm Insecure.” This song explores vulnerability as it shines through the lyrics. The soft angelic voice is perfect with the beat dropping as it progresses, creating a good contrast.

All in all, Family Business obtains a little of everything, to show that this band truly has a passion for music and is sharing their stories with the world. They are musically inclined, and I will be keeping up with the band as they continue their journey. Check out the TikTok video that reeled me in—I'm sure it will work on you too: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8REuakD/.
