Glass Hands has been on an eight-year journey in the metal genre, showcasing their talent as a three-person group that pushes technical limits. They have been featured in Alternative Press, Loudwire, and on several Spotify playlists, accumulating more than 60k followers. Following the release of their first EP, Detox, in 2022, they are back with “What My Mind Can Do to Me.”
The song begins with an explosive, emotional sound that contrasts beautifully with former vocalist Adam Anderson’s (he/him) strong, versatile, and soft voice, which conveys deep emotion. Even when he shifts to brutal screaming, the two elements complement, rather than drown each other out. The band skillfully dictates the emotion, connecting the music to the listener's feelings. It’s impressive how well the loud vocals and instrumentation work together.
According to the release, “‘What My Mind Can Do To Me’ is about the isolating experience of getting trapped in your own head, but also about the fear of falling back into that state even after you've made it out.” After a long month, I find I can relate to the feeling of being stuck in my head. Even though I’ve overcome a lot and grown stronger, it’s often harder to access those emotions after doing well. You never know if you can get out of it again.
When artists are placed into a genre, they can feel constrained by the standards. It’s difficult to experiment when they know they are expected to fit a certain sound. However, I appreciate how Glass Hands doesn’t let this stop them from pushing the boundaries of the metalcore genre. Their willingness to test limits enhances my appreciation for the techniques they employ in their music.
Glass Hands is an incredibly talented band that operates both inside and outside the box of the metalcore genre. Be sure to keep an eye out for them!
