WRITTEN BY MILLIE TURNER
Most songs released by the music industry machine are lukewarm ballads that recycle the same messages of heartbreak over and over. These songs put us in an almost zombie state and cause us to wander around in a stupor of surface level lyrics. But when you listen to Jont’s newest single, “Fingers Crossed” your lyrical standards will go up tenfold.
Jont (he/him) is an independent musician from London, England. His newest single “Fingers Crossed” was released on April 9th of this year. When I first listened to this song, I was immediately impressed. Instead of the same lyrics of shallow impressions of harmful love that most mainstream songs pump through our headphones, Jont’s lyrics are deep and real. The track speaks of the reality of a troubled person in a troubled relationship.
Jont is narrating the song by speaking of the antagonist holding onto childhood trauma and how their dysfunctional family is a factor in their bad behavior. The behavior bleeds into the relationship and Jont hopes that it won’t get passed down to the next generation through the following lyrics: “Self preservation is the lens through which you see / You've known it from day one in your flawed and disjointed family / Hurt people hurt people is the mantra to which you drown / Fingers crossed the pain won’t get passed down / Of course it will how do you think it gets around?”
This song brilliantly writes about the complex reality of raw human flaws that show up in a relationship. If you are tired of the same old mantras from the same old style of music, give “Fingers Crossed” by Jont a try. You won’t be disappointed. Listen to Jont on Apple Music, Spotify and Youtube.
