You may have heard her voice and talents in Marian Hill before, an electronic duo with famous hits like “Down” and “One Time.” Now taking her own step toward the spotlight, Samantha Gongol cascades a different glow in her debut single and music video “Flash in the Pan”—and if I could only usea couple words to describe this song, they would be transcendently beautiful.
In her music video, she stands on a traditional stage with an old microphone, bedazzled in a gorgeous body suit glittering with stars. I enjoyed the literal sense of her stepping onto the stage and having the music video focused only on her, giving her a moment to put a face on her voice. The arrangement of the song is extremely refreshing and scratches my brain in the best way possible.
Knowing her in Marian Hill, particularly in “Down” since it was my ringtone back in high school, I’m excited to see her experiment with a different look and artistry with her musical talents. The song felt magical and it gave a vintage-feel that I didn’t know I was interested in. It’s the sort of song you’d hear in a 2000s romantic movie during a montage of the main characters falling in love, or a feel-good song to get ready for in the morning.
In the release, “Samantha delves into the complexities of getting older, confronting the fear that her moment in the industry might have passed, and wrestling with the question of whether to keep going or walk away.” Continuing on, Gongol shares, “I wanted to have fun with this record and do something really different from the band. I have been in Marian Hill for 10 years, and I love it so much. But I was just craving a little something new.”
