WRITTEN BY CAITLIN TRAVERS
Acclaimed singer, songwriter, and arts advocate Maya Ixta (she/her) just released her debut EP Diary Entries this past Monday, September 16th. The intimate and introspective album is made up of a deeply personal collection of songs that draws inspiration from Maya’s own diary entries, offering a glimpse into her emotional tribulations and creative journey. Beyond her incredible presence in singing and songwriting circles, Ixta also lends her time to activism—her non-profit scholarship foundation, HeARTS of Maya, works to support arts education programs. Ixta’s well-recognized and professionally acclaimed musicality is the driving factor behind this new release—and what an album it is!
The first song of the EP, “First Entry” introduces us to Ixta’s incredible soundscape, complete with stunning harmonies in her hauntingly beautiful voice and the crisp sound of paper tearing—an incredibly unique and intimate way to open any album. The lead single “Time” is among my favorites: its transcendent melodies in two languages layered with guitar immediately earned it a spot on my fall playlist.
In "Little Things," Maya reflects on the rapid pace of modern life, urging listeners to appreciate the mundane. The distorted and chopped vocals warp and intensify before burning out into a sense of calm, fully embodying the song’s message of focusing on the positive to find a sense of peace in life. “Too Soon” is a poignant tribute to Ixta’s Abuelito, the inspiration behind her musical journey. Its slower beat and piano backing, along with Ixta’s lighter and ephemeral voice direct your attention to her poignant and heart-rending lyrics.
“Someone is you" is a heartfelt tribute to Maya’s best friend, celebrating the beauty of those special bonds we experience once in a lifetime. The song transitions the album from the slower, nostalgic soundscape to one that’s a slightly more rhythmic and upbeat.
"Say You’re Mine" wraps up the album—continuing to traverse the soundscape the “Someone is you” set up, the message of standing in your power and breaking out of society’s mold begins to grow alongside a powerful and almost carbonated sound. Produced alongside her teacher, Joleen Bell, the track centers on Ixta’s repetitive refrain.
Maya Ixta’s vibrant and self-respective tracks are among the most vibrant I’ve heard this season. Looking forward to more of her work!
